DESCRIPTION

When a ships were constructed in the 19th century, half hull ship models were often used during the design and construction of the ship. This replica is perfectly detailed right down to the bow figurehead. This Thermopylae 1868 clipper ship half hull model was handcrafted in basswood and is a solid carved wooden hull. The clipper ship model is then sanded and hand painted with dark & light honey contrasting stripes on the hull and a black topsides with a red rail. The entire hull has an antiqued distressed finish on it to give the model a more authentic antique look.

Thermopylae was built for the Aberdeen Line  in 1868. She measured 212' × 36' × 20.9', with tonnage 991 GRT, 948 NRT and 927 tons under deck. The hull planking was American rock elm from the garboard to the light water line, and then teak from there to the rail. Being of composite construction, the planking was fastened over an iron frame. She had exceptionally fine lines. The coefficient of under deck tonnage was 0.58. This compares with, for instance, Cutty Sark at 0.55 (i.e. slightly sharper than Thermopylae) and Ariel at 0.60. Iron was used for the fore and main lower masts.

This model accurately details the Thermopylae clipper half hull.
